Caldicot Castle is a beautifully restored medieval fortress in the town of Caldicot. It is set within 55 acres of picturesque grounds that include tranquil gardens and a wooded country park, making it a popular spot for visitors and events. The first fortification on the site was a Norman motte-and-bailey castle built around 1100, succeeding an earlier Saxon structure. The castle was significantly expanded in the 14th century when it came into the hands of Thomas of Woodstock, a son of King Edward III.
After falling into ruin, it was bought in 1885 by Joseph Richard Cobb, a wealthy antiquarian who meticulously restored it as a family home.
The castle was purchased by the local council in 1964 and opened to the public in 1965. Visitors can explore its impressive stone walls, towers, and courtyards, giving them a glimpse into medieval life. The main entrance is through a magnificent 14th-century gatehouse, which has been restored to its former glory.
The castle has a reputation for being haunted by several ghosts, adding to its mysterious and romantic appeal.
