When planning a visit to the peaceful hamlet of Ellwood, you will find yourself in the perfect launchpad for exploring the ancient woodlands and dramatic industrial ruins of the Forest of Dean. While the village itself is a quiet, idyllic residential base, it sits directly adjacent to several of the region's most iconic heritage and outdoor attractions.

Located right on the edge of Ellwood, these atmospheric industrial ruins are free to explore. Walk among the remains of the experimental 19th-century furnaces where Robert Mushet perfected the global production of modern steel alloys.

Ellwood is situated on the outskirts of Coleford. Depending on how you choose to travel, the journey is very quick:

  • By Car: It takes about 5 minutes to drive via Tufthorn Road or the B4228.

  • On Foot or Bike: There is a relatively flat, scenic route of roughly 2 miles that takes about 35–40 minutes to walk or 10 minutes to cycle

Coleford is a historic, bustling market town in west Gloucestershire, England. It serves as the main administrative capital and commercial heart of the Forest of Dean district. Situated just 4 miles east of the Welsh border and the scenic Wye Valley, this vibrant town seamlessly bridges its gritty industrial past with its modern role as a thriving tourist hub.

Ellwood sits squarely inside the western edge of the Royal Forest of Dean. Think of the Forest of Dean as a giant, magical island of trees tucked into the corner of England.
