Uplands Cottages (Thatchers Visitor Centre)

£18 PUN Grass No Electric

Uplands Cottages is all about peace, quiet, and getting away from it all. Tucked away in a beautiful corner of the Mendip Hills, the site sits in 36 acres of mature, landscaped grounds. The moment you turn down the long, tree-lined drive, the outside world just fades away. It’s a beautifully secluded spot, backed by quiet woodlands and full of local wildlife.

When you want to wander out, the lovely village of Winscombe is just a short stroll away. It has a great village vibe with a proper local butcher, a bakery, and a Co-op for the essentials. If you don't feel like cooking, you're spoiled for choice with great local takeaways—everything from fish and chips to Chinese, Indian, and kebabs. Plus, there are some fantastic spots for a sit-down meal nearby, including the famous Thatchers' Railway Inn.

Just a short trip down the road from the Uplands estate is Thatchers Cider at Myrtle Farm. Located in the village of Sandford, Somerset (BS25 5RA), this historic farm has been home to the Thatcher family since 1904. Over four generations, it has grown from a local farm into one of the UK’s most famous cider operations, seamlessly blending ultra-modern production with deep-rooted West Country traditions.

The Behind-the-Scenes Tour

The official guided tours offer an impressive, multi-sensory look into how the farm processes its apples from orchard to glass.

  • What You’ll See: A walkthrough of the heritage orchards, a look inside the massive mill house, and the chance to see their 150-year-old oak vats where special blends mature. You also get a bird's-eye view of their staggering packaging hall, where a high-speed robotic bottling line fills and tracks thousands of bottles an hour.

  • The Tasting: The experience wraps up with a tutored tasting session of their full range, covering everything from core staples to limited-edition seasonal blends.

  • Key Details: Public tours typically run Tuesday through Friday. Tickets cost £20.00 per person, last roughly 2 hours, and must be booked in advance via the Thatchers Tour Booking Platform.

  • Accessibility Note: Because the farm tour winds through a fully operational mill, narrow factory corridors, and outdoor terrain, it is not suitable for wheelchairs, mobility scooters, or walking aids.

The Thatchers Cider Shop

If you prefer a relaxed browse without a full tour, the on-site farm shop welcomes walk-ins and features complete, step-free wheelchair accessibility. It is a treasure trove for cider lovers.

  • Straight From the Barrel: The shop features a line of active barrels where you can purchase fresh, local draught cider poured straight into take-home containers.

  • Exclusive Stock: Beyond their full drink lineup (including hard-to-find single-varietal and specialty ciders), the shop sells local Somerset cheeses, chutneys, branded glassware, clothing, and unique gifts.

  • Opening Hours: Closed on Mondays. Open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM; Thursdays from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM; and Sundays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
